Wyvil - a school for the community?

Wyvil headteacher Chris Toye has made it plain that there is no plan to cut maternity benefit from the enhanced level enjoyed at present. This means that any woman who elects to start a family can be confident of continuing their career and ve about £10,000 better off during each maternity than they would be compared to some local schools.

Wyvil is a vital part of the community in the Vauxhall area. It serves that community in that it has a representative intake including 50% free school meals as well as a large black student cohort and also special needs. A large black presence is evident on the teaching force.

Unfortunately, by a majority vote of governors, it elected to become a Foundation school, despite concerns being raised by both our union and colleagues from NASUWT.

We are concerned that there is a tendency to select in Foundation schools that shows taht they have 20% fewer youngsters with free school meals than community schools.

We have experienced the change of status over a few years now and do not detect any changes to working conditions that are in excess of those changes being forced through by government.

Any problems referred to us have been resolved via consultations and we remain supportive of any teacher wishing to apply for a post at the school
