The New Centre

The New Centre The new centre has opened as a purpose built properly facilitated unit, a marked contrast from the condemned building that they had to inhabit back in 2002.

It now caters for a wide range of needs in the borough, mainly excluded youngsters with a Head of School under its Executive Head, Richard Leonard

The background

It is apparently the first purpose built PRU in the country and is indeed an exceptional design and a credit to the borough. The background Lambeth Secondary Pupil Referral Unit, recently known as Norwood Secondary Centre was established on the Norwood Park site in 1997.

Till 2002 it was the only PRU for secondary students. For a short while the LA opened Rectory Grove for KS3 students aiding the functioning of the Norwood Centre. The state of the building at Gipsy Road was a major problem, to the extent that the Authority's own Health and Safety Representative condemned the building and NUT Regional Secretary, Stuart Cankett considered the building almost beyond use.

The NUT members were extremely patient with the LEA, as were the PRU management. In 2003, the PRU moved to the Elmcourt site and then in 2007 to Woodfield while the new Gipsy Road site - the Park Centre was rebuilt Return to other local news items
