About the school

'Hillmead school is in central Brixton and represents a vibrant community and the diverse culture that the NUT is committed to serving'. It is certanly the case, given that the school is centrally placed in the Brixton Community, just off Coldharbour Lane.

NUT supports teachers within the school and most teachers are NUT members. The school is split into year teams and uses the 'three teacher model' which means that three teachers work with two classes in a year group, so PPA and all other responsibilities are calculated within the team - we areassured that this is popular in the context of this school. We urge teachers looking for posts to consider working in this school, so if you do have any concerns, please contact us at the union office.

Richard West

Statement provided by Headteacher Richard West

'Both senior managers, including myself, and most teachers are NUT members.

As a school Hill Mead is committed to recognising the professional status of qualified teachers. We undertake that classes at Hill Mead will only ever be taught by fully qualified teachers.

Every teacher already enjoys half a day non-contact time weekly and NQTs have a full day. Every teacher has their own laptop.

All classes in KS 1 and 2 are taught on a ratio of 3 qualified teachers to sixty children. This will not only raise attainment but help further to address teacher workload and well-being.'

(Richard West, Headteacher)

Lambeth Teachers Association, in supporting its members and union policies wouldn't always agree with school managers, including that of Hillmead. However, we have to say this from experience: Richard West is outstanding in his determination to support his staff in an age when it is not particualrly fashionable.
